Why Weigh Your Caravan
Before You Go?
Gross Combination Mass (GCM)
This is the total weight of your entire caravan setup, including both your fully loaded caravan and towing vehicle. Think of it as the combined weight limit for your entire rig.
Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)
This is the maximum allowable weight for your towing vehicle when it's fully loaded, including passengers, cargo, and the caravan itself. This limit is set by your vehicle's manufacturer and can be found in the owner's manual or on a sticker inside the driver's door.
Tow Ball Weight
This is the downward pressure exerted by your caravan on the tow ball of your towing vehicle. You can find this information in your owner's manual. A simple weight distribution gauge can help you measure your actual tow ball weight at any time. Ideally, this weight should be around 10% of your caravan's Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM).
Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM)
This is the maximum allowable weight for your caravan when it's fully loaded but not hitched to your towing vehicle. This limit is set by the caravan manufacturer and includes both the weight on the caravan's axles and the tow ball weight. You'll find the ATM listed on a compliance plate on your caravan.
Gross Trailer Mass (GTM)
This refers to the actual weight on your caravan's axles when it's hitched to your towing vehicle. The GTM will always be less than the ATM because some of the weight is transferred to the towing vehicle when connected.
